Breakfast you had a varied choice. The facilities were really good especially the pools. Staff were all so friendly and always helpful. Location was good for getting out and about. We had the garden view and it was nice waking up to the birds singing.

The jacuzzi was unfortunately closed for maintenance the whole week.

The Porto Bay is a beautiful hotel in a great location. The views of the ocean are amazing. The restaurants are excellent and service is great. I didnt like that a king bed is really two beds together and that can be uncomfortable. The staff was extremely friendly and we took couple of the tours to visit Madeira. The island is primarily a nature island for hiking and breathtaking views. The island is extremely safe, well organized, excellent food. We had dinner at the michelin restaurant of the hotel and it was ok compared to other Michelin restaurants. It was a bit slow, the experience can be better. Overall, other michelin in Portugal are better overall experience.

we were there during renovations, so hotel running at half capacity and occasional noise. Also prices of drinks at bar and food at pool, prohibitively expensive. This meant that we and others went elsewhere and that was a shame.

At times I felt I had arrived at this hotel 10 years too early given the average of the other visitors!

All round a very comfortable hotel with excellent facilities in a great location. I would choose a bay view room next time but our superior sea view room on the 7th floor had a wonderful view of the ocean. The service was excellent in all areas of the hotel and staff were very friendly and welcoming. .We didn't hire a car and enjoyed exploring Funchal extensively on foot.

The only minus I find in the absence of iron in the room. It is available on request, but it could be already in the base.

The whole stay in the hotel was an exceptional experience.The expectations from the photos and reviews were high, but the reality even exceeded it. The staff was always kind, smiling, explained everything perfectly and was always helpful. My greatest admiration goes to the staff at the Rose Garden Restaurant, who even when they are busy around other guests, make your visit a unique moment. The half board accommodation was absolutely worth it. The breakfasts are rich in fresh food and the selection varied even slightly. Dinners consist of a three course menu and there is a choice in each course. However, the dining experience is beyond description, what a perfect interplay of flavours the local chefs are able to create. The cherry on top of our stay was the perfect area with nooks and crannies where one could sit and relax in peace. Madeira is a beautiful island, I would not have enjoyed my holiday so much without the quality and peaceful facilities. I will be happy to return.

bathroom comfortable but the style a little old fashioned on checking out we felt uncomfortable when we were asked if we wanted to leave any tips for staff, this should be given discreetly to individual members of staff as we did

beautiful hotel in a lovely position by the sea, staff very friendly, really good quality breakfast with plenty of choices and good service you wouldn’t use this hotel if you were expecting entertainment in the evening other than light music during cocktail hour or a violin etc, no dancing.
