The room was comfy, clean and cosy. The charm of the furniture, mirror, artwork resonated with character of an older building, french doors etc... and bathroom was modern and felt lux. Had a heat pump above our bed which was great on a freezing night in front of tele Lol Nice, affordable and clean. Sheets were crisp, clean and mattress was so comfy 10/10

Beautiful building, view and location and the kitchen is top notch. They offer health and rejuvenation services, but you can stay there as a regular guest as well. I loved the drive down here, with the ferry, from KariKari.

It's a handy base to visit other attractions such as the giant kauri and the Koutu Boulders. We were there on a Saturday so the Markey was open. There are harbour cruises and kayaking available and trips to the sand dunes for tobogganing.

I should have booked further on the road.
I should have booked further on the road. This motel is too old and dated and far too cramped among other adjacent rooms for comfort. At $240 /night it was shockingly overpriced. The bathroom was so tiney, you could barely turn around, also the old toilet. The shower had a plastic curtain! ( circa 1970). The place was clean but really too old to be operating espeially at this price. The owner or the operator was pilote and pleasant ( Felicity and Sasha) but really, we were not impressed, in fact VERY disappointed. Cutlery in the drawers was toally unmatched1 Like a scout camp.

Location was great but unfortunately the room was dirty and the pool was closed due to health and safety. The staff were friendly and accommodated as much as they could. It was difficult for them because they could see how dirty things were and they tried their best. It needs an upgrade. It use to be such a beautiful place to stay at.

We did not stay in Opononi but had breakfast at the Thai Landing which was excellent. We booked the Manea footprints of Kupe cultural experience which was informative and professionally presented. Would recommend.

Have stayed here a number of times over the past 8 years. Since the change of ownership you can really see the decline in service and appearance.
Villas cost more now than they ever have yet there are broken toilet roll holders, broken TVs, horrible wifi issues, not enough staff, rooms not being serviced and a kitchen that caught on fire.
This place is in need of some serious work and adjustments. Sad to see such a historical place in the Hokianga go down like this.

beautiful part of NZ, beaches, bush walks, and not too many people around. Food was a little disappointing as due to covid a lot of places were closing early or not open at all.
Our dinner at the Opononi Pub was average, unfortunately the restaurant wasnt open for dinner on the Saturday night. This was one place we were looking forward to dining in.
The restaurant at The Heads was open, so we enjoyed eggs bene for breakfast which was quite nice. Service Staff here are very friendly.
We stayed on the basis of self catering. What we loved about the property was that it exceeded our expectations. The position is wonderful with immediate access to the beach. Whilst there are very few facilities for us in this location (it didn’t matter as that’s why we chose to stay there) there was a hotel where we ate it and the two nights we were there and that was extremely good. There was a local shop where we go to get supplies. On a five week trip to New Zealand, this was one of the highlights!
Wow this place was a little gem. We stayed here for the night as we wanted to do some walks in the Waipoua Forest to see the big Kauri trees. It had everything we needed for an overnight stay. Bed and pillows really comfy. View to die for and great deck for afternoon drinkies. Not too many places to eat to Opononi so we got some really nice take away from the Thai restaurant and bought it back to the deck overlooking the water with a bottle of wine - what more could you ask for.
The Opononi Lighthouse Motel was well situated for our return road trip from Russell as we headed to Auckland. The room was a modest size but appointed with all that we needed. The lovely lady tending the front desk was very cheerful and helpful in answering our questions and making us feel very comfortable. Loved the hot tub and outside BBQ cooking area. The Asian lady at the Landing Cafe about 500m down the road, makes the best Pad Thai and White Flats,
Beautiful location where are you can organise a water taxi to sand dunes got sand surf into the sea (in summer though), near Koutu Boulders and little quirky/arty Rawene. Thai takeaway or dinner the neighbouring hotel. Motel had bbq facilities and little outdoor spa bath for summer. Room small as expected but clean, tv, kettle, microwave, plates, table/chairs, two arm chairs. Friendly owner. Kauri museum (and Kai Iwi lakes) en route back to Auckland,
The room was comfortable, the bathroom modern and clean.
We had a little balcony which was nice to sit out on and enjoy the sunset.
Receptionist was helpful when I needed a fresh towel.
The hotel is old and has a lot of short stay travellers, but it’s a unique charm. Breakfast was simple but more than adequate, staff were quick to replenish the bread etc
We absolutely loved this hotel. Fantastic view over the enormous sand dune, nice and spacious rooms with a generous outdoor veranda. Absolute sea access, clean water and nice beach. The pool area is wonderful and the food in the restaurant is excellent. Staff is attentive and super nice.
Would like to return and can highly recommend.
I had an amazing experience at the Sands Hotel! The food was absolutely delicious, and having the beach right outside my room was a dream come true. A special shoutout to the chef for going above and beyond by cooking dinner for me even after the kitchen had closed. Thank you for making my stay so memorable!
The house was really beautiful and comfortable. It was a delight to stay here. We had a wonderful view of the water and it was close to Opononi centre. Nellwyn was so accomodating and a pleasure to deal with. Very friendly and informative. This is a real treasure and we highly recommend it to you.
A great sized room, fully equipped for our needs, clean, tidy, modern, and just a great vibe. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The location is perfect. I would be happy to recommend the lighthouse Motel to all of my friends. Thank you for a great stay.
Incredible facilities. Hotel-style bathroom (amazing after being used to hostel bathrooms!), and lovely kitchen and common area with TV, books etc. Quiet location. Owners were lovely and the right amount of being involved without intruding on my stay
Very serene location nestled in the mountains north of Opononi. A great house with many features such as fireplace, wrap-around deck, full kitchen, two baths, amazing views.. The list goes on
Old landmark hotel with great bar and restaurant. We were supposed to have a room with 2 beds but they did not have any. The management gave us 2 separate rooms instead. Very accommodating
Among other houses in a patchy holiday and low-income area, it was different and sort of quaint. View across other houses of Hokianga Harbor. The blue bach was tiny, but very clean.
The Opononi Bliss was perfect for our stay! The host was friendly and provided lots of helpful recommendations. We loved the cleanliness and decor of the cottage. Highly recommend!
Flowers galore surrounded this very cute lodging. Manager was very friendly and helpful. Our apartment was pristine, bed was very comfortable. Several restaurants nearby.
