Lamu is a mesmerizing town with a beautiful history.
Lamu is a mesmerizing town with a beautiful history. The people are very friendly and welcoming. For instance - the town can be like a labyrinth, which makes it a bit challenging sometimes to find spots - even with Google Maps. Either people ask you if you need help or you can ask them and they show you the way - many of them even walked us to the location. This experience was so wonderful - I would definitely come back again.

Great, quaint town.
Great, quaint town. The scent of the donkey excrement is off-putting but seeing them is sublime. Being a coastal town, there are many ‘captains’. I had my transport pre-organized with my accommodation so be weary of that and potential scams, as well as the impromptu tour guides. Touch water, take a sunset sail boat ride, and visit the beach, maybe even Shela. Locals were very nice and friendly, warm welcomes. Affordable restaurants as well, Sailor’s Joint for example. I stayed at Subira House.

A beautiful resort, with many amenities with a lot of details paid to the decor. Unfortunately, not the same attention was given to the 3 restaurants. Poor quality food with a limited selection except for a very nice breakfast buffet. Had confirmed a twin bedded room, but did not receive one. The beds are extremely firm as the mattress sits on a cement platform but does have a nicely hung mosquito net.
Easy access across the water to Lamu.

- The ocean activities are marvelous!
- The ocean activities are marvelous! Amazing experience, memories I will always treasure. Food was also nice, a lot of seafood. Very culturally rich too!
- The town is dirty, because of monkeys, people in Lamu seem to have gotten used to it, but for an outsider its not. In addition, they don't treat the donkeys right, so it's sad to see them suffering. Lamu is a small town, I wish they would think of other means of transport and at least for people just walking, donkeys should be forbidden. There was also a lot of trash on the street, even in monuments.

Lamu is quite a unique place which is different from the main land of Kenya. You can enjoy the historical environment, beautiful beaches, sun rise and sun set, relaxing on the boat/dhow. And Lamu people are very kind to visitors, I love it. Some activities in the sea may be affected by the tide. So, it's better to ask people in advance when you can do the activity you want to do.
After a slight misunderstanding as to the day or arrival, Elizabeth and Cornelius promptly managed to solve the issue and pick us up and have the house ready for us. The staff was always courteous and available to help us. Steven, the cook, cooked wonderful meals as per our requests and we settled all bills directly with him.
The swimming pool is marvelous and the terrace is also a wonderful spot when the breeze flows.
Highly reccomendable if you prefer to stay in Lamu old Town to explore historic sights, rather than in Shela.
We had a very comfortable stay. The staff is very helpful, friendly and welcoming. The house is tastefully decorated and had what we needed to make our stay comfortable. The location is perfect for walks in the old town and along the channel, also very close to a variety of local food joints and the donkey sanctuary. We would definitely go back if we are looking at spending time in Lamu again. And I almost forgot to mention, the breeze at night with the windows open was gorgeous. We stayed in one of the King suites.
Great location very close to the seafront, super friendly personel, breakfast was simple and good, the roof top has great view which the breakfast lounge is located and our day every morning was starting with lot of energy from the dunes and Manda beach. We loved Florence (a young local lady) which was working at the hotel ,super vivid ,super helpful with the greatest happy smile on the face everyday which made our stay at the hotel most pleasant!!!
The swimming pool also, saved our lives....many hot evenings! 😉
This is a wonderful place to stay! It's a little haven from the busy lanes of Shela and Lamu Town .... so peaceful and calming. Its pretty garden, pool and relaxing ambience make it a stunning choice to totally unwind.
Yoga and a massage spa are available.
The staff are friendly and personable and the food is excellent. One evening we had a choice of a swahili meal cooked by local women ....incredible !!
We loved our stay and were sad to leave.
Wonderful stay in a heritage building in the heart of Shela, with local live going on around the accommodation. Phone and they will pick you up at the pier, as the place is quite hard to find ( I kept getting lost). Wonderful common areas to hang out, lovely breakfast in the mornings. The host was very helpful in arranging a doctor to come round when I needed (minor) medical care. Woud stay again.
Very comfortable stay in a perfect location in the Lamu old town. The price is unbeatable, and it had everything we need to have a comfortable sleep.
Muhammad, Emanuel and their team were super friendly, supportive and professional.
Previous review said negative things about the toilet, but our experience was great. Comfortable clean well managed toilet.
Bayt Qaflh was such a nice little retreat! We spend hours on the roof terasse, which I believe has the best view in Shela.
Our host organised a boat airport-pickup for us, had a coworker meet us (Hakim was extremely nice) and we received a full list of great recommendations. Bayt Qaflh really allowed us to relax and disconnect for a few days.
Amazing and ecological gem in the middle of Lamu town in a traditional and beautifully restored and decorated house. Delicious and thoughtful breakfast and all the staff is amazing!
Trips to beaches, mangroves and other beautiful sights can easily be arranged from the hotel.
Beautiful old house amid the old town. Spacious
rooms with open air seating at the entry of each.
Fantastic roof top area wiling perfect views.
Great breakfasts and wonderful staff. Mary will
make sure you experience the best of Lamu.
Thank you Mary.
Conveniently located, but need a guide to find the house for the first time. Beautiful architecture with plenty of room to stretch out. Easy access to Lamu old town and Lamu House Hotel restaurant. Not a lot of other good restaurant choices nearby.
Samaki is a super beautiful house located in the center of Lamu, very close to the fort and the museum, with a 30 minutes walking distance to Shela beach.
We had an amazing time there and it was one of our best and memorable stays in Kenya
Location was conveniently central for exploration of the town, shops and a walk to Shela. The house was interestingly quiet and peaceful despite being in the middle of town.
clean, mosquito nets, hot shower, ok breakfast. You can organize tours from hotel staff. 30 min walk to the beach, very good restaurant beside the accomodation (Lamu house)
A beautiful, relaxing and serene hotel in a stunning garden right on Shela beach with a laid back vibe. lovely staff, tasty food, beautifully presented.
