The view outside was awesome. We had a private bathroom and use of a communal kitchen. This is a very remote area and we were grateful for the accommodation.
With sea views, Skjólsteinar is located in Grundarfjordur and has free WiFi. This homestay is located on a farm with farm animals living on site.

If you're looking for fancy accommodation with new furniture and lots of space, this may not be suitable for you. However, if you're interested in meeting locals, this is a great opportunity. Some reviews mention the smell of horses in the house, but it's not like the house is filthy; it's most likely just some rugs or shoes in the hall (if you have a dog, they're probably the first thing you smell in your hall). I should mention that our room was clean and odor-free. The kitchen is small, so I wouldn't recommend any big cooking. We spent just one night here. We cooked some pasta, took a hot shower, chatted with the house owner (a nice guy), and got some good sleep - perfect for this purpose.
Set on a farm 8 km from Grundarfjördur, this modern guest house offers a 9-hole golf course, plus free Wi-Fi and parking. Snæfellsjökull National Park is 40 minutes’ drive away.

View was outstanding, as was the breakfast. Our host offered us a cup of tea on arrival and was happy to engage us in general chit chat. The view from the bedroom offered us a chance to watch the sunset over the sea and from the breakfast room there is a panoramic view of the mountains and sea.

Grundarfjordur is a convenient town for exploring the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. It has a good grocery store and two excellent cafes for coffee & treats. A little food truck is open until the end of August. We stayed here 4 nights so we would have time to explore and I'm glad we did because one day was too stormy to see sights and another day wasn't optimal.

Destination port for cruise ships, correspondingly temporarily overcrowded. All pilgrimage to Kirkjufell (known from social media), which is accordingly overcrowded. Deterrent example of Icelandic mass tourism. :-(

Definitely not worth the extra drive time, town is not set up for tourists at all, hotel was 350 euros, which was very high compared to all other night on our trip. We spent the same, but had much better accommodations. Much more to do in the other towns

The town/village itself is really quite sweet.
The town/village itself is really quite sweet. We didn't spend much time there, but we did drive in to use the grocery store and walk around a bit. Kirkjufell Mountain is really quite stunning and one of the most recognizable Icelandic landmarks. You can just sit and look at it all day.
For such a small town, Grundarfjordur is packed with loads of hotels, guesthouses, shops and places to eat. Highly recommend if you're in the area.

This small mountain gets a lot of positive press and yes, it's kind of cool but really not all that great. We were trying to find it the last time we were here (three years ago) and drove right past it. There is a parking lot on the left as you are leaving town and you need to park and get out for the mountain to "look" like it looks in the pictures you see everywhere- with the waterfalls, etc.
There are numerous sights around Iceland that make this one look like a joke. Still...stopping for 5 minutes to get a picture or two will be worth it but you won't look back on this one and remember how awesome it was.

A gorgeous setting next to Kirkjufell Mountain!
A gorgeous setting next to Kirkjufell Mountain! It is a very convenient base for exploring the Snaefellsness peninsula. Dont miss the wonderful restaurant, Bjargarsteinn Mathus, where our meal was truly exceptional.
The staff was kind and helpful. We arrived late but no issue for checking in.
The location was great that we supposed to see Kirkjufell from our room (but due to the weather, we couldn't). The room was clean and equipped with comfy bed. The washing basin is located in the room, outside the bathroom so it is convenient that one could take a shower while the other could wash his face/brush his teeth.
There is also common dining area available. There are also nearby restaurants within the walking distance.
Located on a remote road and overlooking the water, the Sudur-Bar Guesthouse is a comfortable place to stay in this part of Iceland. We had a room with a private bath and found it to be everything we needed. The bed was comfortable (though the pillows were mushy.) The bathroom was modern. The breakfast was good. The host was friendly and gracious. The WiFi was solid.
We enjoyed our stay and, returning to this part of Iceland at a later time, we would stay here again.
This Guesthouse is an absolute delight in the peninsula.
From the good comfort to the impeccable cleanliness, our stay was nothing short of wonderful. The hosts were friendly and nice. The location is fantastic, offering easy access to local attractions and amenities in Snæfellsness peninsula. We particularly enjoyed the private bathroom. Highly recommend Stoð Guesthouse and Apartment for a memorable stay in Iceland.
Grundarfjördur Hostel is just a short five-minute drive away several restaurants, including one where we stopped called Kaffi 59, and Kirkjufellsfoss, one of the highlights of Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The shared living area and kitchen were spacious, with plenty of light, a refrigerator, and cooking facilities. Everything was clean and it was quiet at night even though there were other guests in the house.
The guesthouse feels like a little cosy inn, and we got to meet other guests when making breakfast in the shared kitchen. The best things we like are (1) cleanliness and completeness of the small room, shower, sink, toilet and nice bed all included, and (2) a spectacular view of Kirkjufell, particularly at sunset.
The little town Grundarfjordur is quaint. We had dinner at Cafe 59 two days in a row.
The interior of the hotel was extremely clean and tidy. The staff were so nice and helpful- my friends and I had instant noodles and even though the kitchen was already closed, they were still kind enough to offer to heat up our food and provide some hot water. The rooms were nice and clean and lots of space. Right outside our window was the Kirkjufell mountain too, which was a nice bonus :)
We stayed one night. The room is very new, spacious, modern and very clean. The location is perfect, only 5 minutes’ drive to Kirkjufell. Supermarket, gas station, breakfast cafés and restaurants are in walking distance from the hotel. The room has a well-equipped kitchenette and Netflix. Th owner was available by phone. We were positively impressed by the owner´s hospitality.
The most delightful lodging of our entire 10 night stays in Iceland. And they have all been good. It's an adorable guesthouse with a spacious shared living area and kitchen. The bathroom provides ample space as well. Not so tight, like many places. I highly recommend staying at Eidi Farmhouse if you are staying on the Snæfellsjökull Peninsula.
A little treasure! This guesthouse is super comfy. The rooms are very nice and we really enjoyed our stay here. The bathrooms are super clean and modern. The kitchen has everything you need and the armchairs in the living room invite for a relaxing end of the day. This has been the nicest accomodation on our whole trip through Iceland!
Very convenient location, only about 10 minutes car drive from Kirkjufell, which made our stay in Dis Cottages even more lovely! Enjoying midnight sunsetting in a total quietness except for bird chirping is Must Have experience if you love peace in isolation. Also managers of the place are very welcoming and stay just nearby.
We rented the 4-people flat. It's clean with all new facilities, located in a quiet area. From the flat we have a lovely view over Kirkjufell (the most photographed mountain in Iceland). The kitchen facilities are very new and the entire flat is ideal for a group of 4 people.
The breakfast at the Cafe was excellent. The owner happened to come in and was friendly much like the staff. He helped me with some ice for our campervan cooler which is an unusual request in Iceland, but it was an extra nice thing of him to do!
One of the best places we have stayed in Iceland! The bed was very comfy, it had a full kitchen and private bathroom. Everything was very clean! The owners are very kind and are accommodating. Will stay here when we go back!
Spacious, largest property we had booked in our 10 Day tour of Iceland. Comfortable beds, Washer & dryer. Had everything, great for families. Great Location, Short walk in to town, Kirkjufell Mountain View
We stayed at 8 different properties during our stay in Iceland and Dis Cottages had the most beautiful view of the moutains and ocean of all. The cabin was cozy and the bed was very comfortable.
