Great location just under Penshaw Monument, in the middle of the countryside. Very good facilities in the property and very well laid out. Owner even set up a Xmas tree and lights for our stay - a lovely touch. We also made use of the cafe next door - they make an excellent cooked breakfast in the morning.

Quite a treat, to be able to stay in a historic castle and yet have a lift to make access easy for a visitor with breathing problems! The staff at reception were extremely accommodating and helpful, even arranging a meal in our room one night for a nominal fee. Dinner was exceptionally good quality, and the restaurant staff were efficient and friendly. The situation, 15 minutes from Beamish and with easy parking, was ideal.
Very central for Durham City and surrounding areas.
Very central for Durham City and surrounding areas. Large free car park which was easy to manouvere. Hotel was lovely, rooms were large and well stocked with toileteries, hairdryer, iron on request which was brought swiftly to our room. The adjoining bar was well stocked with lots of different beers/lagers, wines etc. Food was available in either the bar or the Thai Resturant. Staff are very friendly very helpful, nothing was any trouble to them. Would not hesitate to return.

Set by the side of a busy country road in beautiful countryside close to the A1(M). Fabulous beer garden, plenty of parking and large restaurant.
We stayed in a beautifully appointed room but unfortunately this was at the front of the hotel and the traffic was busy. To be fair, if we hadn't needed the window open so wide due to the warm evening then this would not have been a problem to us.

Now 53, I lived in Houghton le Spring for the first 22 years of my life, with many family and friends still living there. I can honestly say there is nothing for anyone in Houghton unless you are visiting friends or family. It's difficult to sum up a place in a few words, but with the single ATM in the town centre not working when we were there, most food outlets having a hand-scribbled note on the windows reading "Cash Only", and all closed shops on a night feeling the need to have steel shutters, sums it up for me. There are still lots of lovely people living in the town, but I really couldn't recommend it to anyone that doesn't NEED to visit!

It's a little gem of a hotel, not only was our room beautifully presented, extremely comfortable and very clean, but also the dining room perfectly matched the great food. An added bonus was found in the public bar which was like stepping back in time. But the real plus was the staff, from the housekeeping ladies, to the restaurant staff all were fantastic, but a big thank you must go to Louise for her attention to detail and all our needs. Definitely going back sometime in 2023.
The bed was very comfortable and the room facilities were great. As I was travelling for business it was great to have a bar and restaurant on site serving excellent food and drink. The breakfast was also brilliant for the price we paid. I thought it was great value for money and the location is ideal for what I need. I will definitely use the hotel again in the future when I need to travel to the area.
Lovely clean rooms and comfortable beds. Lovely big fluffy white towels. We stayed in a family room for 3 nights. The staff are a credit to the hotel, so friendly and accommodating. The Thai curry was amazing and a lovely friendly bar atmosphere. Would definitely recommend this hotel.
Newly refurbished rooms above the hotel have been completed to a very high standard. We were greeted by Amy who took us to our room. She was friendly and helpful. Our room was comfortable and clean and we enjoyed our stay. Breakfast in the morning was excellent.
This is a very good hotel and superb value for money, way, way better than other travel chain type hotels that would be considered as there competitors. Very good Thai restaurant too which was a very pleasant surprise and delicious.
Lovely cosy room, very quiet. Beautiful food in the restaurant very nice staff.
