This was incredible- the monks were the best as was the staff- this is def the upper scale of the temple stay experiences- rooms were VERY nice ( full tv ac bathroom etc) the communal baths were very cool and so needed after a day hiking about , dinner and breakfast were ELABORATE 10-20 wee courses, beautifully laid out and in a 450 years old dining space, I attended the morning g prayers which was so worth it- when I arrived early I asked if I could just leave my bag but they just showed me to my room earl- SO kind- the property is stunning, room view stunning, location perfect!!
I came from Kyoto on the 8:10AM Keihan bus DIRECT from Kyoto station, drop off at Koyasan buss station- 5 min walk to Fu Doin- going back to Osaka hah! Bus to the Cable car, cable car, 3 trains mamma mia….anyways, DO THIS- Koyasan do not miss: the cemetery! ( you could spend hours here) Awesome Rock garden at the main temple Kongobu Ji, the huge Dango Garan area- I walked all the time peeking at other areas

Amazing experience!!! There is a heater in the room, so even if you are traveling during the cold season, you can sleep in a heated room. Great typical dinner, and excellent location.
Located in the sacred Koyasan area, Saizenin offers simple accommodation surrounded by mountains and many temples.

Great to experience a temple stay. The vegetarian dinner was excellent, served in your room, with accompanied explanations. Rooms surprisingly quiet, with some expected noises. Shared bathrooms at set times. Right behind kongobu-ji temple complex.

The place is really central and near major sites. The staff is welcoming and you can store your luggage. The room is as described on booking. The place is absolutely exquisite. You can relax at the onsen or walk in the garden. Food is also very good. Beds on the ground are good enough to enjoy the sleep.
The train and cable car were thrilling. The forest surroundings gave the town a cozy feel and kept the air so fresh.. The English Guide Club provided a very knowledgeable guide, Mayumi. I learned much more than what you find in books. The burial site is really amazing - a must see. There are some great coffee shops too. It's worthy of a repeat visit.

This temple is very remote.
This temple is very remote. The area is beautiful and the hiking was great. There is an extra tour option of the cemetery. I thought with the price we were paying that this tour should have been included.

Pretty town, huge graveyard, worth exploring but just one...
Pretty town, huge graveyard, worth exploring but just one day needed - Either pay for the decent hotels and experience the true temple koyasan experience or book a lodging and explore the area. Our expensive (but cheapest temple room) felt super touristy and set up. Food was awful. - Its pretty long to get there from Osaka also.

I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one...
I would definitely recommend the experience of staying one night at any of the temples and also the Okonuin Night Tour is a real must! Apart from one person and the Guide (Nobu) the staff of Eko-in was somewhat arrogant and be prepared for an uncomfortable and short night, but a delicious and huge dinner and breakfast. The sights and nature are stunning and beautiful, really serene and perfect to contrast the buzz of every big City. We bought the digital Heritage Pass and tool the Limited Express Train to Koya, I would recommend! Apart from the Bus from the Cable Car to our Temple we walked to every sight by foot, since they are not far from each other and the whole town is a complex of a „Sight“. The Tokugawa Mausoleum was especially astonishing, since it’s full of Japanese history.
We will absolutely visit Koyasan again, but I would not choose a Templestay again.

Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity.
Okunoin Cemetery night tour is a must do activity. So much of our understanding of Japanese Buddhism and Koyasan’s role in its history was informed by the monk who was our guide. We checked out Okunoin Temple and the cemetery the next day, too. It is a very special place.

It is imperative to stay in a temple - the vegetarian meals...
It is imperative to stay in a temple - the vegetarian meals at our temple were delicious and had many courses. The town has so many temples and good hiking opportunities, we could have stayed longer - but my husband was too much of a foreigner to stay in the temple for two nights. The wonderful Okunoin Cemetery and shrine with an ancient forest was a special treat - we spent an entire morning there, and it was a nice surprise that the buddhist monks take their stewardship of the natural environment so seriously that there is even a forestry department of the temple. Other temples were equally awe-inspiring.
Everything was perfect . I would love to stay with the monks for a couple more days .
The room was incredible , beautiful and simple at the same time . The best room with the toilet in all the hotels we stayed in Japan .
The vegetarian food prepared by the monks was so delicious and beautiful ! And the meditation at 6am and 5pm is a very good momento to learn more about Buddhism . The bath is very clean and nice , it was a very good experience .
Maybe one day I’ll have de opportunity to return . Thanks for the experience .
can't get more authentic than this temple stay, so you shouldn't expect too many modern conveniences. Most appreciated thought was the space heater in the tatami bed room (temperatures outside hit 0c)! The included dinner and breakfast consisted of an interesting array of vegetarian dishes, some sourced locally (ie. mushrooms). The location is right off the main road in Koyasan, and steps away from the entrance to the Okunoin cemetery.
We really loved our stay in this Komyo-in Temple.
We participated in the evening meditation, the morning prayer and fire ceremony. The dinner and the breakfast was very delicious and we were really pleased that during our dinner our bed was prepared for sleep.
The location is very nice, it is very close to Okunoin cemetary.
This was the highlight of our Japan tour and we really recommend vist Koyasan.
We are so happy we chose this temple for our stay in Koyasan. It was quiet and peaceful and the staff was very kind. The morning ceremonies were definitely an important part of the experience. The place felt much less crowded compared to the other temple stays that we passed by in town, which we really appreciated. It has a nice garden and a relaxing indoor onsen, available for guests in the evenings.
The area Jokiin is situated in was perfect for my stay. It was in close proximity to all the historic and spiritually significant sites I wanted to see. The staff there are excellent, very passionate people who are maintaining a beautiful tradition. While I myself do not speak Japanese, the staff were more than accommodating for me and my needs.
This is a unique property style in Japan. You are staying in temple lodgings (宿坊, shukubō). We enjoyed our stay, we had a great, simple room with all we needed. The room was on a separate floor to the workings of the temple. It also offered a unique opportunity to learn and observe the practices of the monks and the temple.
Even nicer than the photos look. The building looks newly refurbished and my room was clean, comfy and modern. The owners were super friendly and made me feel very welcome, including excellent food and service on their izakaya downstairs. The location is great for sightseeing in Koyasan, only 10 min walk from major temples.
Good location; Spacious and sprawling; Adequate privacy; Peaceful and solemn space; Helpful temple and property staff; Particularly loved the Japanese garden, including the pilgrims’ room and communal dining room with a view. Deeply enjoyed the authentic feel of the temple and its facilities.
A cozy traditional Japenese guest-house, right near the Daimon gate. The room was spacious and comfortable, and the facilities were super comfortable. The relatively low price (in comparison to the temple-stays) allowed me to enjoy Koyasan without having to pay a huge amount on accomodation.
Great experience staying in a Buddhist monastery. Excellent (vegetarian) dinner and breakfast. It is expensive ... but a unique experience. The small town of Koyasan is a very interesting locality ... close to nature ... and a wonderful, peaceful atmosphere about this town.
Such a beautiful temple! The monks were all so lovely and inviting, the morning prayer was a privilege to listen to and there was plenty of food to fill you up for dinner & breakfast.
The location is also amazing, Koyasan is absolutely worth the journey!
the traditional inn was very peaceful, with a nice bathing house on the first floor.
room was very spacious, in a Japanese style futons that were comfortable
morning ceremony and breakfast were nice experiences.
The guest house was beautiful, very clean and it felt very authentic. Nori was also very kind and he gave me several great spots to visit in Koyasan as well as in Japan in general. I can highly recommend this stay!
Nice Shukubo experience in Koyasan. Staff were very nice and looked after our bags before and after checkin/out. Absolutely gorgeous Japanese garden that was showing its full Autumn colours.
I’ve stayed here before, I brought my wife and we enjoyed the proximity to the cemetery and the food and temple services. it’s a nice experience and different than elsewhere in Japan.
This is my favorite of the three shukubo I’ve stayed in at Koyasan. It is literally 30 seconds from Danjo Garan, which on its own is worth the price of staying here.
The location is excellent, very central in Koyasan. The temple is beautiful, with a nice garden. The rooms were clean and the shared facilities as well.
