Scenic little town with lots to view. We walked the town and explored all the tourist sights. Took a short boat ride around the bay for 1000¥ ,if you want to sit upstairs on boat you’ll need to pay another 600¥. Main Shrine currently under renovation

It's amazing.
It's amazing. There's such an incredible amount to do and see. We explored for 5 hours two days in a row in the freezing cold and would do it again in a heartbeat it was so nice. So many restaurants, hotels, gift shops, places of outstanding beauty, museums... amazing.

It is really a beautiful view, with all those small islands covered with pine trees! The region is very prepared for the tourists, including bridge to one of the islands for people that like to walk around the trees!
The Zuiganji temple is one of the most beautiful I've seen!

Very beautiful coastal town!
Very beautiful coastal town!
Having two different train stations on each side of the town, makes the getting to/from very flexible and easy.
Definitely a must see when visiting Sendai or the Tohoku/Myagi Area.

This is a very nice little town and a nice place to visit - I would go back. Good harbour cruise, nice temple visit - there are three close together.
Oh and the castle shown on google maps is FAKE; its not a castle its a private residence.

Matsushima is a tiny place and does not have a lot to offer...
Matsushima is a tiny place and does not have a lot to offer - also like any other traditional Japanese town it closes down at 6 PM - literally. Most restaurants and shops are closed, the streets atr dark. Not much to do. It is a great place for a short stopover.
A small ryokan in Matsushima. Quiet neighbourhood, and konbini is on the other side of the river. There is also a supermarket and Daiso about 10 minute walk away. The Japanese style room is comfy and intimate. Simplistic. There is an onsen facility on site too. Proprietress speaks some English. Knowing some Japanese to show appreciation is helpful and they appreciate it a lot. Wifi is available here. The owner drove me to the train station which is some walk away.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Clean, large room with private bathroom and toilet. Great view onto the bay. Accessible rooftop with 360° view. Multiple shared baths (onsen) including outdoor bath. The first morning there was a buffet style breakfast as advertised, the second morning a rich traditional Japanese style breakfast. The free shuttle service from / to the train station is convenient if you have a lot of luggage.
A lovely retro atmosphere hotel on a steep hill overlooking Matsushima bay. Really excellent quality and variety of breakfast served on each of the days. Welcoming and helpful hosts and appreciated the free shuttle to the station as the hotel is on a hill, it was a nice touch. The free private baths were nice, especially the hinoki bath. A lovely view from the room of forest and sea.
Superb location just at Matsushima Bay, with views of the pine clad islands and Fukuurabashi. Within 20-30 minutes walk you’re in the main shopping street, Zuiganji temple and the pier for the cruises. The breakfast spread is outstanding (we were not even hungry at lunch !) as are the onsen facilities. The staff are also helpful, kind and friendly.
This is one of the friendliest places I've ever stayed at. The owner is friendly and knowledgeable and worked to make an atmosphere where guests from abroad and around Japan can meet and chat. The place is really spotless and great care clearly went into that. Each room also has a fresh air fan to bring in filtered air from outdoors.
Really kind staff, absolutely gorgeous building, comfortable and clean bedrooms: this ryokan is a perfect affordable place to stay to explore Matsushima! You can also rest in the onsen after a long day of walking. The location and atmosphere of the ryokan is calm and quiet, and I slept extremely well.
The location was excellent. It’s a short walk from Matsushima-kaigan Station and literally a stone’s throw from the pier, and from attractions like Zuiganji and Entsuin. It’s also a beautiful property and the host made every effort to make us guests feel at home!
The room is very large and very well maintained. The hotel overall was a surprise, it's really nice and well designed, much better than most hotels at this price range. Lastly, the owners are very friendly and made our stay a pleasure.
The beautiful hotel had an excellent room with a view. We do not like buffets, but we made exception. Each main meal was made to order. Best high quality sushi and steak. We will definitely recommend to our friends.
Amazing hotel with nice facilities and restaurants. Beautiful view of the Matsushima Bay for those staying at Ocean View rooms. Wide variety of food (japanese, western and chinese) buffet for breakfast and dinner.
Great onsen (women and men separate) with a view on the Matsushima bay from the 5th floor, delicious meals prepared in front of you, refreshments during the day included. Overall very nice chilled experience!
The hotel was quite nice, little bit old fashioned, but clean. The room was large enough, in traditional Japanese style (tatami).
The spa ("onsen") was really good, we enjoy it very much!
Stunning
views from the rooms, the hot spring baths and an outdoor foot bath.
rooms very modern and very comfortable.
watching the sunrise over Matsushima Bay was amazing
The Japanese style breakfast was excellent and large, more than I could eat. Situated on a slight rise, there was a good view from our window on the third floor.
