Wow! The Backyard Balangoda is something truly special. Nestled in the family’s beautiful tea plantation, it is a stunning retreat designed and created by talented young artist Sumit. From the architecture, through to the branding, and through the restaurant into the fabulous menu, everything has been carefully considered to give the visitor a completely unique Sri Lankan experience. The accommodation is in a rustic style, immaculately clean and-frame bungalow with the most stunning views over the valley - an absolutely magical experience to stay in and wake up to. While this is totally off the beaten tourist track, it’s so totally worth visiting - we were only sad we didn’t have time to stay a few more days. If it’s available, book it! Just make sure you book a few nights! Well done sumit! Keep doing what you are doing.

The place is cheaper and suits for a regular stopover. More like a lodge, with basic amenities. Staff is cordial and cooperative. Hot wateris good. The Manager assisted in getting acco for my driver. And got me dinner from outside.

It was very clean. Staff is supportive. Kind of deferent experience in the middle of lush green thick vegetation around gave us a feel like stay middle of a jungle. We stayed here for one night we enjoyed it so much we extended for another night. The host is a very sweet & warm person. He is an interesting man and keeps his home and the guest apartments very clean so much so I was impressed at how neat and well thought out the spaces were. They smelled very fresh as did the bed linens and towels 🙂 We stayed in the budget room equipped with two huge beds, fluffy pillows a fan, great shower with hot water & huge kitchen with a fridge. This was so needed and appreciated after spending the whole day exploring waterfalls and trekking through the stunning scenery that surrounds this homestay. The host has a beautiful garden with tropical flowers and spaces for guests to sit and enjoy the garden also you can enjoy the many authentic & delicious breakfast, lunches & dinners the host will provide at a very reasonable cost. He truly takes the hassle out of everything for you and will go miles out of his way for you. We felt very safe and extremely cared for here. There are gates with locks on for your scooter and your own private access to the building. This homestay is in one of the most beautiful and historical regions in Sri Lanka. The staff, amenities and the food at the restaurant were all so exceptional! Falling asleep to the sound of the river below was total bliss. We were thrilled to have opted for the river cabins - we loved our lush everything was outside our room. We also appreciated how the hotel had free daily activities planned and listed on a board, including tours of the local village and excursions to the nearby waterfalls. We stayed with our 18 month daughter and had a bliss stay. I would definitely recommend staying here for a minimum of 2 days for a totally relaxed vacation! What a little GEM of a hotel! Well worth a trip to the area!
