FAQs about hotels in Southampton

Historic Port of Walls

Departure point for Isle of Wight ferries and grand cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2, Southampton is understandably centred around its port. But even if you’re passing through, the city has more than enough to make you want to stay awhile. The Hythe Ferry from the port passes Netley, site of a ruined abbey, and ends at Hythe Pier, home to the world’s oldest pier train.

There is much older history in the city centre where the 15th-century city walls are amongst the most complete in England. Also remaining is the medieval Bargate gatehouse.

Just behind is the Bargate Shopping Centre, while high street stores in the city centre and West Quay are other Southampton shopping choices. As for entertainment, the city is well served by theatres, and Oxford Street has the best bars and restaurants. All are easily reached from the apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Southampton available on Booking.com.

There is also a surprising amount of green space in the city and its central parks are Grade II-listed. Slightly further out is Southampton Common, whose Urban Wildlife Centre is worth a visit.

If you’re flying out of Southampton Airport, don’t leave without having visited the Maritime Museum or Archaeology Museum, both detailing the history of this long-established city.

We went to Southampton to go to the Mayflower theatre which is good value compared to London theatres. It has lots of shows and good facilities. We will go back. We also had a good dinner at Papillon which is opposite the theatre. We stayed at the Ibis which is good value and well located for the Mayflower.

    We stayed in 003.

We stayed in 003. Very spacious but this is what facilities I should have had. The spacious family room features a tea and coffee maker and a seating area, as well as a private bathroom boasting a bath. The well-equipped kitchen has a refrigerator, kitchenware, a microwave and a toaster. This family room features a sofa, heating and a flat-screen TV. The unit has 2 beds. All we got was the tea & coffee making facilities. Table in there but nothing else. Rooms spacious but found lounge & beds very uncomfortable. Thankfully only stayed the one night. Quiet & grounds lovely.

The town centre has loads of shops and a large indoor shopping centre. There are several parks and lots of green space available. There was a huge choice of cafes, restaurants and pubs for all price brackets. We went to the 1865 club which holds lots of musical events. We were a bit concerned doing the 30 minute walk through the parks when the event finnished, however we saw at least 3 separate groups of police walking around the town and parks so felt very safe.

We had a really good stay with several nice meals, Found the people very pleasant and helpful. Really good shopping centres. Town was not too big and by the sea with several parks. There was something for all ages. Had all the major entertainments like cinema and ten pin bowling. Lovely museum and art gallery - well worth a visit.

Southampton is a little under-rated as an historic town.

Southampton is a little under-rated as an historic town. The walls are virtually complete on one side, there is one of England's best town gates and there are several old buildings to visit. The Art Gallery is just about the best south of London and the Sea City Museum is well worth a visit- especially for the Titanic story.

We arrived a little before the 3pm check-in time but our room was available straight away. I had requested a quiet room if possible because my child is on the autistic spectrum and we were given a room in a very quiet part of the hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful and the room was exceptionally clean and comfortable. The hotel is in a convenient location for the city centre on the edge of the old town. I would definitely recommend this hotel to other travellers and would stay there if I was visiting Southampton again.

Highly recommend The Lighthouse. 5⭐ Great easy check in. Very clean, bright and comfortable accommodation. Lovely welcome basket of bread, cereals . Fridge had milk, wine and beer . Lovely touch 😊 Excellent location for what we needed and very quiet Excellent communication with owners from booking. We had a minor issue in the accommodation and it was dealt with on the same day by Ian. Thank you We will be returning next time we are visiting our son. So much better than hotels we have stayed in in Southampton

This is my go to hotel when I go to Southampton. I witness some people expecting a service beyond the price they pay but the staff always pull out the stops to appease them within the capabilities and products available. For me the location is perfect, breakfast is included and provides both hot and continental options. The room has basic plus facilities and is always clean. If you have any concerns or issues, or just need basic help the happy, helpful staff will do there all to help.

The breakfast was superb - apart form the re-hydrated Scrambled egg. Everything was beautifully presented and the food area was spotlessly clean. Great selection of tasty foods. Something for everyone. The lighting in the room / bathroom was lovely. The communal social areas were fabulous. pillows were super comfy Plenty of sockets and charging spaces around the hotel. The hotel is in a very good position for visiting the theatre in Southampton, whilst being in a very quiet and secluded place. The room was a good size, with a bath rather than just a shower. The breakfast offering, again went above and beyond, with an exceptional choice, and very good quality. The gentleman overseeing the breakfast room was delightful. At the price, this hotel would be very hard to beat.

Thought the location of the hotel was very convenient near to the port and near to the old historical town area of Southampton. Our room was very comfortable and spacious. We had breakfast in the hotel which wasn't included in the price, which I thought was unfair. The quality of the food though was very good. The reception staff were very friendly.

The room was very clean and well put together, and we appreciated the complementary drinks. The location of the hotel, while an approximately 25 minute walk from the train station, was close to the best parts of Southampton. Breakfast was top notch. We stayed in around 8 hotels in this England trip, and this one had one of the best menus for breakfast.

The location is good and the price is fair but the property is not easy to access as entry codes are not provided early enough to allow us to receive them before departing from our home country. Having no internet access in the UK, it made it almost impossible to enter the hotel without the help of a kind stranger who had internet access.

Location close to the Cruise Terminal was great. Southampton is a major cruise port in Southern England. The bed was comfortable. Dinner in the hotel restaurant was just okay. It's a bar/cafe combo without much variety. Staff handled an issue with the room well (and seemed embarrassed as well).
