Lovely room with view out over gardens and pond, and what was probably beautiful scenery which due to the weather we could not see. The included continental style breakfast was very nice. The young German lady Fransisca who appeared to do everything at the hotel was really lovely, helpful and friendly, a great front of house asset.

The motel was mostly clean (except the bathroom - see photo) and reasonably comfortable.
The kitchen had everything needed for cooking.

Franz Josef is a must do destination when travelling in the South Island, especially if you like the outdoors. Got up early and travelled to Lake Matheson to watch the sunrise - possibly the best experience in all our years of travelling. The cafe at Lake Matheson was brilliant as well and Alice May restaurant in Franz Josef was brilliant for dinner.

A must see on any New Zealand itinerary, but one day is sufficient. Perfect for adventurous young people who like walking, not so much for older persons. The helicopter ride was bit of a rip-off as the weather closed in and we could not land on the glacier. Although they did give us a little refund, it was not up to our expectations and very expensive 20 minute ride.

Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora and fauna. The walks were amongst the most scenic and beautiful we’ve ever experienced. Only downside, which I feel needs to be more clearly explained to visitors, is that the glaciers themselves can only be seen and viewed from the lookout points if it is a clear day without low hanging cloud. We were disappointed to not actually see the Franz Josef Glacier nor the Fox Glacier from the fartherest reach of the walks. Environmentally, we were not prepared to fly/chopper to see the glaciers from the air. Nevertheless, the walks themselves are a must do, driving through the region is gob-smackingly beautiful and the walk around Lake Matheson a must see.

Our helihike was cancelled due to weather, so we did a quad bike in the rain. IT WAS AWESOME! We smiled for the entire two hours.
There is a sweet chapel for quiet and reflection.
We never saw the glaciers as it rained for three days straight which was so sad.
The grocery and a few restaurants were enough to find something to eat.

We were unlucky with the weather, as there was low cloud and some rain. We took a couple of walks to see the glacier from viewing points which were really good. Paths were very good, not muddy, and there were signs to explain the ecology and history.

A small town with a couple of shops and plenty pubs/restaurants. The glacier is 7kms from the town - drive to the car park and then there’s a short walk to the viewing area - you’ll need binoculars or a long lens to truly appreciate the beauty of the glacier. Fox Glacier is 30 mins away and again there’s a pretty uphill walk to a viewing area. You can get a helicopter onto the glacier but they are $$$.
Lake Mathewson is worth visiting while in Fox, park at the car park and walk 30/40 mins to the jetty. Beautiful especially at sunset but use bug spray as there are lots of midgies!
This was a beautiful place to stop and enjoy Franz Josef and Fox glaciers. We arrived in the dark and were greeted with a happy smiling face and a refreshing drink of Kiwi juice and a hot washer.
Our room was incredible - so spacious and comfortable. The body products were simply fantastic. The smell was incredible.
We ate in the restaurant for our dinners and breakfasts (2 of each) and the food was delicious and the service was incredible.
I would highly recommend this to anyone. I would certainly return (we didn't want to leave).
The free breakfast and free soup for dinner was lovely and so was the ability to use the hot tub. You got a lot of value for what you are paying to stay in a dorm here. The place is eclectic and older though it had everything I needed to sleep, cook, and hang out. The person managing the place works tirelessly to clean and care for the hostel. The beds had privacy curtains, individual lights, and outlets and were quite comfortable. Excellent location and cool view of the mountains and glacier!
Rainforest Retreat is a wonderful spot to stay in Franz Josef! Mel at the front desk went out of her way to recommend great hikes, restaurants, etc. and was so friendly and welcoming. The room itself was spacious, clean, and very comfortable. We also enjoyed the amenities like the hot tub and on site laundry facilities. Dinner at the restaurant on the property was also lovely. Thank you for a great stay!
location was great with the Franz Josef glacier walk about 5km away & the Fox glacier walk about 24km
away.
restaurants & bars were also a short walk away.
helicopter flights to the glaciers were in abundance on the Main Street which was a short walk away. we did the helicopter trip to the top of Fox glacier where we were able to get out of the helicopter & on to the glacier which was amazing.
The Chateau is centrally located in Franz Josef. It is a great place to stay on your travels through Glacier country. The host welcomes you and had great tips about where to eat. They offer free soup and the breakfast is good! It is a nice little family but with enough privacy (I booked a private room).
The location is excellent, with easy access to Franz Josef township and only 30 minutes from Fox, but slightly out of town to be away from the noise. The two bed apartment we had was spacious and had two separate bathrooms, which is a plus compared to similar accommodation in New Zealand.
Our first impression was that the place was a bit run down but the view of the glacier made up for any lack of outdoor care. The room was very nice (2 rooms), clean and comfortable. We stayed 2 nights and liked that we were out of the town noise (helicopters) and crowds.
These little cottages are good for a 1 or 2 night stay. The room was clean. The kitchenette and shower were adequate. The view of the mountains from our window and deck was spectacular. The location was quiet, and perfect for walking to everything in Franz Josef.
The room was spacious and had a small kitchen which we used. Bed was comfortable and the location was great for walking into town and the Glacier viewing platform walk.
Lilly at reception was also very helpful and pleasant to deal with.
Would stay again.
Joy at front desk very helpful. Little glowworm patch at neighboring hotel across the street was a treat. Hotel was immaculate. Nice breakfast and perfect laundry facilities (complimentary detergent)...
Becca at the front desk was great! Her communication was well done and professional.
She also told us on a rainy day to go see a movie on the glaciers, etc The movie was fabulous.
Scenic Hotel Franz Josef Glacier was temporarily closed at the time we stayed, so we were transfered to Te Waonui Forest Retreat. Everything there was really great.
