Set in a 19th-century building, The Sands Hotel, Orkney is situated along the shore of Scapa Flow in Burray village. It has a bar, a restaurant and beautiful sea views. The rooms overlook the water, with gorgeous views no matter the weather. It was the perfect location for us to travel over multiple days to the many archaeological sites we wanted to visit. We had a single unit with two bedrooms upstairs and a living room/eating area with en suite kitchen, which was perfect for preparing meals in addition to eating in the restaurant. Might have been more space than we needed but having the living room was nice to decompress after a day running around the islands.

Situated on the Orkney Island, 14 miles from Kirkwall, Smithfield Hotel offers 3-star accommodation with free parking, a bar, and a restaurant. Kirkwall airport is 30 minutes’ drive away. Very warm welcome from staff. The room was spacious, warm and very comfortable with quality bedding and pillows. Very good shower, great cooked breakfast, with choices, and free parking. Nice and quiet, away from the main towns, supermarket and fuel across the road. Central access to island sights. Highly recommend.

Located on the shore of Harray Loch and family-run for over 30 years, the Merkister Hotel is a 15-minute drive from the main towns of Kirkwall and Stromness. The Merkister Hotel is located on Loch Harray a beautiful and serene setting. It was also an easy car ride to sites such as Skara Brae and about a 20 minute drive to Kirkwall. The staff were all very pleasant and we enjoyed excellent breakfasts and dinners in the Skerries Restaurant.

Set in Kirkwall, Orkney, family-run Ayre Hotel & Ayre Apartments overlooks Kirkwall harbour. It offers local produce in its restaurant and traditionally styled rooms, with free Wi-Fi. I like the property as most of the time it’s quite a quiet place. Good soundproofing.

The Stromness Hotel is set in Stromness. This hotel offers free WiFi. Ring of Brogdar is 6 km away and Standing Stones of Stenness is 6 km from the hotel. All rooms in the hotel are fitted with a TV. Rustic and charming, exacly what you imagine a once grand hotel from 1901 in a small fishing village on an island in North Atlandic should look like, loved it.

West End Guest House is set in Kirkwall, 1.2 km from Highland Park Distillery. Free private parking is available onsite. Certain rooms feature a seating area for your convenience. Thanks Andy for all the help -- we made it to see the Old Man of Hoy!
