Quietly tucked away on Philae Island and accessible only by boat, the facility is family run and we really enjoyed the stay. Tamer Darwish is the host and fortunately speaks very good English as our Nubian/Arabic is less than adequate. Tamer was always available to assist by phone or text. The mother/daughter team that tends to the daily operations do not speak very much English but with the use of google translator, we managed to fill in the gaps. The room was clean and comfortable, the food was so very good and plentiful…I have no idea what most of it was, but it was delicious! Plan ahead to ensure the boat is available, and they can arrange cars or whatever you may need. We typically arranged the boat for an early morning departure and then returned for a fantastic meal in the quaint, pillow-laden open-air dining area as we reflected on the day and watched the Nile go by. As we were there during Ramadan just a few weeks ago, one evening as the entire family gathered to break fast, we were graciously invited to join. We enjoyed a great meal and wonderful conversation with a few that spoke English…it felt like we were part of the family. Kind, gentle & giving people, will always remain in our memory. If the absolute opposite of a Hyatt or Holiday Inn is your thing as it is ours, try it.

Heissa Hostel ligt in Aswan. De accommodatie is voorzien van avondamusement en een gedeelde keuken. Het hostel biedt een zonneterras. This is a real gem of a hostel - the position outweighs everything else. Superb location and so lovely to be somewhere so beautiful and peaceful and to travel everywhere very cheaply by boat. The manager Rehab speaks fantastic English and is lovely and incredibly helpful. The other Nubian staff are also lovely. Don’t be put off by the basic shower - it’s hot with a great jet. Yousef the boat driver/helm is a cutie. Breakfast was good but no tea or coffee offered. Evening meal was simple and could be improved but it didn’t matter due to the location - the restaurant on the neighbouring island opposite the temple was great but try to avoid 8-9pm as that’s when the temple light show is on if you want a peaceful meal. Abu Simbel day trip was worth the drive. Visit Elephantine Island from Aswan and wander to the Green of the other side through the streets of the village - real rural Nubian life and well worth it. Also take a Felucca trip (about £5 or 200el per hour). Worth seeing the soul/market for the spice shops, real life and felafel making. Just a gem of a tranquil place to stay!
