Made famous for its “hills alive with the sound of music”, Salzburg is a very pretty town filled with romantic buildings and squares. If you are not yet aware that Mozart was born here, then you will be as soon as you land at Salzburg W.A. Mozart
International Airport. Further your education about this musical prodigy at his actual birthplace, Mozarts Geburtshaus. The city is the namesake of the Salzach River which runs through it, and alongside this beautiful river lays the Schloss Mirabell, one of the many impressive castles within the city limits. Schloss Mirabell and Hellbrunn with their picturesque gardens, beautiful galleries and impressive halls make the ideal spot for a picnic during summer.
The white-stone Hohensalzburg fortress is perched upon a green hill and offers magnificent views over the city. Or, you can escape it all in the Kapuzinerberg forest, which offers splendid Alpine vistas- a reminder of Salzburg’s natural beauty.

Salzburg is just beautiful.
Salzburg is just beautiful. You only need 2-3 days to explore but it's well worth a visit. The Hohensalzburg Fortress is a must see and will fill up a morning; whilst there is a funicular up to it (the walk is very steep), we took the elevator to Winkler Terrace and then walked along a clifftop walk to the fortress and were rewarded with the most spectacular views on the other side of the cliff. The Mirabelle Palace Gardens are also very scenic (famous as a filming location in the Sound of Music) and the view across the gardens to the fortress is spectacular.

Visited the Eagle's Nest, the Salt mines. Attended a concert. The old city is fantastic for strolling and shopping. The Fortress, St Peter's restaurant, the oldest restaurant in the world, and it has an excellent menu. Getting around is easy. Uber, Taxi, bus.

Salzburg is lovely with the mountains visible from almost every part of the city. It's a walkers paradise and for longer distances public transportation is more than adequate. The bus connections are on point. Most of them driving to or past city attractions. Also, public transport is very affordable as it should be in every major city. Salzburg food scène is not subject to mindless consumption like other major cities which is actually a welcome breath of fresh air. On a major holiday, we were shocked to find out that most restaurants were closed. However there are enough places to eat with good and friendly staff, tasty food and especially, well priced for good portions. So yes Salzburg is lovely to visite.

We stayed a week, which would probably be too long for the average visitor, but we wanted a slow pace and to do things beyond the city. Must-do sights: Residenz (which affords a view into the cathedral), Mozart birth house, Mirabell gardens, Hellbrunn (a short bus ride). The Hohensalzburg fortress too, though the views are its best feature, interior a bit ho-hum. Best places we ate at: for veggie fare, Heart of Joy and for fabulous Austrian fare, Alte Fuchs and Johanneskellar (all of these in 'new town' area). In general, just wandering around is nice. Salzburg is a beautiful city, with great facilities and friendly people. There is plenty to do, the Fortress (Catle) is interesting and the exhibits have changed since the last time we visited. Museum of Modern Art may interest you. Multiple museums to visit. If you’re into the Sound of Music, or Mozart there is much to see. Good location to visit other places like the Salzkammergut. Many reasonable food and drink places in the city - Sternbräu is one of our favourites - and a visit to the Stiegl brewery is worth a thought. Salzburg card worth considering - gives you free public transport and free entry to many tourist sites. 3 day card 46 euros, we easily got 100 euros value and could have had more if we had pushed it.

Blown away,, what a lovely city and we will be back next year for a longer stay. We felt safe and comfortable as we could find our way about easily plus the locals were friendly and it was so lovely we could live there.OK, keeping it real, we were there in May which is my favourite time to travel so we were blessed with superb weather and yes, it would be interesting in January and as I have been to Vienna many times in January I can say visit when the weather is tipped to be right for you and this city will not disappoint. The Coffee was good, tourist walks great as was the food and if you are counting steps, you will get a huge boost in your activity count as it was all too easy to want to walk more and we did and loved it.
