We were on our way from Devon to Glasgow, and wanted somewhere not too far off the M6 to break the journey up for a night. We honestly couldn't have picked anywhere better than The Greyhound in Shap. Just a few minutes off the motorway, but it feels so tranquil and rural, you'd never think you were so close to a major route. Excellent as a base for the Lake District, but far enough out of the busiest tourist spots to offer great value. Such a lovely little hotel with a proper pub/restaurant downstairs, serving great food and beer. Our room was small but perfectly-formed, with a super comfortable bed. We stayed only 1 night and ate at the hotel, but it might be worth driving 4 miles to Alston if staying more than 1 night. The food was OK, but a little pricey. I would definitely consider staying there again to break our journey from the Midlands to Scotland.

Location is just off motorway. Website states 2 restaurants and bar selling food until 10pm, this is not the case. Only 1 restaurant with limited choice and very basic food with vegetables and potatoes undercooked. Rooms are in need of refurbishment and lift and restaurant needed a clean. Food on the floor at our table from breakfast sitting. Wine is expensive for what it was. Receptionist and bar person were lovely but manager was rude and abrupt.Jackie - 10Scored 10
It was very peaceful location.
It was very peaceful location. Not far from M6 so ideal for a stop over or if staying in Lakes great for going off to spend the day out. Even better being able to come back to the peace and quiet after the hustle and bustle of the busy towns in the Lake District. Food was great so get a half board stay as really good value for money. Our room was Beautiful with a lovely walk in shower and bath. The bed was so comfy and spacious. There was a generous selection of different hot drinks in the room with some lovely shortbread too.
