Lone Pine is a quaint town, catered to outdoorsy people who love hiking, rock climbing, off roading, etc. We loved Alabama Hills and Whitney Portal (although we didn't get all the way to the trailhead due to a rock slide). The Alabama Hills Cafe was amazing, and the Museum of Film History was a must before you go out and hike!

What an amazing surprise to find this small town.

What an amazing surprise to find this small town. The ideal place to stay after visiting the Death Valley and if you are a cinema fan. The Western Film History Museum is a must, and also, if you are looking for a quiet old-day town with quite a picturesque atmosphere surrounded by mountains, this is the place!

Loads of fun! Great "base camp" for hiking. Loved the motion picture museum and it was fun going to movie road and hiking some of the sites of movies. The Mt. Whitney Portal hike was wonderful. Enjoyed the town, especially the restaurants.

I'm traveling on a tight schedule; this was just an overnight stop. The town is small and eclectic, at the foot of Mt. Whitney, the tallest mountain in the lower 48. The town draws many hikers and climbers and caters to their needs. For a town of its size, there are an unusual number of dining options. There's a very nice museum housing western movie memorabilia. Nearby are the Alabama Hills, where many movies and TV programs were filmed. Just north of town is Manzanar, a WWII internment camp for Americans of Japanese heritage; the National Park Service has done an admirable job presenting the facility. Death Valley, and the ghost towns of Panamint Valley, are nearby.

    We love Lone Pine.

We love Lone Pine. We stay overnight on our trips to Lake Tahoe. The Eastern Sierras are my favorite mountain range. Have taken many backpack trips in them. Lone Pine is known for having the road to Mt. Whitney Portal. Has many places to stay when getting ready and finishing the hike. Fits most budgets. Be sure to check out Alabama Hills. The geological formations are amazing and many westerns were filmed around the Hills. Our favorite place to stay is the historic Dow hotel. Many actors stayed there while filming their westerns. Alabama Hills Cafe is our favorite place for breakfast. It's across from the Dow Hotel. Could go on and on but, I'll stop here.

The Dow is a quaint, homey, old-timey hotel. As such, one doesn't expect a large, appliance-equipped room or super quiet room. The little town of Lone Pine has grown up around it and time has marched on. Given all that, I sort of collect old hotels and The Dow is a delightful example of the type. Pictures of John Wayne and other cowboy actors who have stayed there grace the walls. The feel is cozy and down-home. It has been well maintained without losing its charm

I was in Lone Pine to climb Mount Whitney. As a "base camp", the hotel is well-located as it is close to the road to the trailhead. I could also walk the main street of Lone Pine to find a restaurant. Room amenities were just fine. Comfortable bed. Very clean. Fridge was cold and AC worked. WiFi reception in the room was excellent. A very fast and secure network. Plenty of ice in the ice making machine also!

Great location as we had a car. Room was a good size and clean. Staff welcoming and friendly. Pool a good addition. Kids happy to see a waffle maker at breakfast! Lone Pine is incredible…we loved Mobius Arch and Whitney Portal! The views are amazing! We only stayed 1 night and had dinner at The Grill in town…1-2 min drive away…super friendly staff and lovely food! Def recommend.

The location of the the hotel was great and very central. The room was clean, beds were comfortable, A/C and shower worked well. It was a big bonus to be able to lie out by the pool. Make sure to drop by Alabama Hills cafe & bakery for breakfast - delicious. We also ate at a Chinese restaurant just down the road from the motel which was surprisingly good.

The hotel is right on the Main Street of Lone Pine. It’s maybe a half mile from Whitney Portal Drive and once the road is open, you can make it into the Alabama Hills in about 10 min. The bed was comfortable and the rooms were clean and everything appeared well kept. The drive to Death Valley is close and it’s about 2.5 hrs from Furnace Creek.
